Google's Facebook & Twitter Deal for Live Search Risks Your Privacy

Recently on Facebook many of my friends have been complaining about FB's new privacy rules. They are concerned because their posts to friends, associates, and family will be made available for the world to see.

Of course there are ways a person can avoid this with privacy settings on Facebook. However, many people aren't aware of how much of the information they posted on Facebook and Twitter to some extent, are being made public.

The new relaxing of privacy on Facebook is causing a lot of concern by its users. But there is something deeper going on that meets the eye.

Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and other social media sites want their content to be made available on Google's search results. Why you may ask? Because content is valuable and will draw more readers outside their online communities. This increased visibility can be monetized by the search engines and large social media sites.

So from this point forward you have to be careful about what you post on Facebook, Twitter, MySpace etc. Remember employers are now looking on Facebook to screen potential employees.

Insurance companies are doing background research on insurance customers. So be very careful about what you put online.

Since I use Facebook primarily for business I welcome the increase in visibility. The increased live results from the social media giants will give search engine and social media marketers a larger digital profile.

More links and exposer for tweets, blogs, posts, articles, video, and podcasts on Google from Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and the SMs will give us more content juice.

Content is King online. So businesses who took the time to integrate social media into their marketing efforts will reap the benefits of the increased search engine exposer.

So what exactly is live search? And why should you care?

It is another web 3.0 innovation to go along with geo-targeting, personalization, universal language translation, profit income automation, and social media maturation. It is the ability for Google and the major search engines to get the posts, updates, blogs, tweets, video uploads links, and anything people put on dynamic forums or social media sites as they happen in real time.

In the past Google had to send out spiders to index the web and categorize it. Depending on whether the info was on a static site or a blog this could take anywhere from a couple of days to a month for a search engine to index the information.

No longer will this happen on major social networking sites. As soon as you post, blog, or tweet, the information could be available live on Google within seconds.

This is important to Google because you may not be a major news outlet or media property but can see something happen outside your door which is important. Or your ideas on a very timely subject can be recorded on Google in real time. To see how Google live search works see the YouTube video from Google on the new functionality below...

I'll research this and weigh in on it in our next web marketing seminar or webinar. I knew there would be a convergence in search engine and social media. This shows the rising synergistic relationship between the two.

Search Engine and Web Marketing Stories from 12-21-09

Facebook is quickly becoming the most sticky social networking site. Stickiness is the ability for a website to keep visitors engaged on the site for an extended amount of time.

In marketing you have to go where the customers are. Now a lot of people are spending time on the social media sites. Of course the two most popular are Facebook and Twitter.

Social media can help a company brand itself, communicate well with its customers, do polls and customer relations and other things to expand your digital profile. This is why this week we will cover some interesting stories on Facebook and Twitter.

1. Here is a great article on Retweeting on Twitter

2. Using Facebook to find a job. Since businesses are using Facebook to do background research on job applicants many employment seekers are looking to flip the script.

Job seekers recently ran advertising research to see if they could grab the attention of potential employers. This is a very interesting development you should take a look at.

Facebook is going to have to become known for getting results for its advertisers. This is the case whether serving up personal employment ads or business ads to be a major media player. Check out this blog on using Facebook to advertise to employers.

3. The Open Source Database Program MySQL is at risk of being owned by Oracle. Check at the appeal of the MySQL creator here to keep MySQL out of their hands.

Google's Search Rankings Favoring Corporate Brands More

Google's President Eric Schmidt, set off a fire storm of controversy when he referred to much of the Internet as being a "cesspool." He seemed to feel that much of the Internet was filled with unverified information.

A big corporate brand endorsing other corporate brands. Sounds like more of the status quo to me. The following is one of his statements...

"Brands are the solution, not the problem," Mr. Schmidt said. "Brands are how you sort out the cesspool."

"Brand affinity is clearly hard wired," he said. "It is so fundamental to human existence that it's not going away. It must have a genetic component."

My independent nature really gets on edge when I think about major corporations taking over the Internet because they have the money to build and finance a trusted brand. But what is the lesson behind branding that we can all learn from this development?

A brand is more than a logo or advertising message of a company. From what I understand it is the core values of a company.

Companies want to brand so their products have higher perceived value in the marketplace. It will become more and more important for smaller companies to brand themselves to have natural search ranking and relevance in the future.

We will all have to create great websites that establish value, trust and credibility in the future to brand ourselves online. Structure a great site that really helps and informs people in your industry and you will eventually rank higher and sell more.

If we become compelling brands ourselves we will have the opportunity again to swing Google, Bing, and the major Search Engines in our favor. They will have to protect their own brands as providing the most valuable and not necessarily the most corporate websites to their users.

Reason 2 to Attend Future Trends 4 Web Marketing 2010 Webinar: Plan to Succeed

We talked about strategy in our past posts. The strategy I suggested was developing a digital profile online.

As we stated having a digital profile was having a presence on digital media like:

(1) Your Website
(2) Blogs & RSS feeds
(3) eNewsletters
(4) Autoresponders
(5) Social Media Pages: FB, MySpace, LinkedIn, etc.
(6) YouTube Videos
(7) Podcasts
(8) Search Engines
(9) Article Distribution Sites
(10) Other Peoples Sites

But doing all this work takes planning. Or it can become overwhelming and time consuming.

You don't want all this work to eat into your time of running your core business. Therefore planning is key to running your operation. The axiom fail to plan is in fact planning to fail is especially true with Internet marketing.

Get on the inside track of planning your digital profile. Join us December 9th for Future Trends 4 Web Marketing 2010 and learn advanced search engine & social media promotion

Reason 2 to Attend Future Trends 4 Web Marketing 2010 Webinar: Develop a Digital Profile

In the past you had to be a techie or hire one to have a presence online. Geeks and techies tend to be less social.

However, the tide has turned and very social persons can now survive and thrive online. All it takes is some know how and the willingness to develop your diversified and dynamic digital profile.

Your digital profile comprises bits and bytes of digital media online which represents you, your business, or brand. Videos of your friends, family, and business activities is one form of digital profile.

Podcasts are also audio representations of your digital profile. Article marketing is a written or textual representation of your digital profile.

Your profile pages on sites like Facebook, MySpace, Imeem, LinkedIn, and myriad other sites are representations of your digital profile. Your website is another example of your digital profile.

But your website isn't enough to represent you online anymore. You need a diverse presence online to have a powerful digital profile.

The question becomes how can you manage such a large and diversified digital profile? That's a lesson for another day. For more on Digital Profiling Goto Future Trends 4 Web Marketing 2010

Facebook Proves Effective for Marketing

This is a great article. It's nice to know people are building lucrative businesses with FB advertising which leverages their geo-targeting potential.

I've used other free methods to tap into their geo-targeting technology and increase both my info-product sales and web marketing services.

I do agree that FB is strong as a customer service application in that a lot of my clients like to reach out to me on the platform.

People can also utilize technology like the Free FireFox browser which processes FB code quickly and add-ons like Yoono to post and monitor their FB, Twitter, Myspace, and Imeem accounts at one time speeding up their workflow quite a bit. Check out How To Do Facebook Marketing

Despite the Deep-Recession? I feel too many parallels are being drawn between our period and the Great Recession. I don't think we do our ancestors justice to compare our time periods.

We have a lot of advantages our forebears didn't have. For instance the Internet gives us cheap access to International markets.

Many businesses are beginning to tap the benefits of social media on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn. Some are networking successfully with local groups on these sophisticated website communication platforms. Are You Ready for Digital Profiling?

So what exactly is a digital profile? A digital profile, from a marketing stand point, is the overall online presence of your business or personal brand. As Google, the search engines, and marketing interests can track your personal preferences online, digital profiling will be something else which is a discussion for another day.

It includes various and numerous places that your business or personal brand is mentioned, referred to or has a presence. It could be on a myriad of places.

It may start out as your business or personal website but would increasingly include your comprehensive presence on Google, Bing, and Yahoo!

For instance you could have an article marketing campaign and appear on tens of thousands of sites of other publishers or even in their RSS feeds. Such a campaign would get your personal brand out there on the Web and even establish you as an expert in your field.

In stark contrast your digital profile could also be an autoresponder series that’s preprogrammed with information you would like to share with your email subscribers. It could also be your posts on popular social networking sites like FaceBook, Ning, MySpace, or Twitter.

Moreover it would include videos on YouTube and mp3s on iTunes. It is any content you have online that represents you.

Your digital profile is your online expression and representation of yourself. A website is only the beginning of your online marketing efforts today.

You have to make sure everything you do online is a good symbol of your core values and put your best foot forward with this digital footprint. The online audience will be able to search and find your digital profile probably from this point on into eternity.

Build Your Business Online with A Digital Profile

These days building your business online is more than just having a website. Your website might be thought of as more of a central focal point or epicenter of your online promotion.

This may be more of the reality because you control your website. Therefore, you decide the focus and the purpose on your own website.

But your website will only be successful in relation to other major websites, applications, and online properties online. This is the case even if you have an ad budget in the millions of dollars to drive visitors to your site.

For instance your site will need to get site visitors from high traffic online destinations. These high traffic destinations today will be search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo!

Search engines are crucial to getting ongoing Internet traffic. These online destinations get Billions of online visitors a month. We already know this if you are reading this information.

But increasing social media sites empowered by video are becoming important online media properties in which to get web traffic. FaceBook has over 250 million users as of this writing, MySpace is holding up at about the same numbers.

YouTube.com reported in May 2009 about 7 Billion videos a month downloaded. In May 2009 it was reported by com.score that there were about 16.8 Billion videos downloaded on the Internet with over 50% being requested on YouTube.

Since your website is essentially a file on a computer (called a server) it is similar to a Word Document on your PC or MAC in that: NO One knows about IT but you and maybe your loved ones! In order for people know about it you have to get links or an online presence on other high traffic sites.

The more exposure on high traffic sites like Google, Bing, Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, LinkedIN and Yahoo! the better. Therefore, our goal in marketing our businesses online isn't just building a nice website but we have to develop a digital profile on high traffic online destinations and drive traffic to our sites.

This is a change in the thinking of many entrepreneurs looking to promote themselves online. But a change that is necessary to thrive and survive online.
