Google's Search Rankings Favoring Corporate Brands More

Google's President Eric Schmidt, set off a fire storm of controversy when he referred to much of the Internet as being a "cesspool." He seemed to feel that much of the Internet was filled with unverified information.

A big corporate brand endorsing other corporate brands. Sounds like more of the status quo to me. The following is one of his statements...

"Brands are the solution, not the problem," Mr. Schmidt said. "Brands are how you sort out the cesspool."

"Brand affinity is clearly hard wired," he said. "It is so fundamental to human existence that it's not going away. It must have a genetic component."

My independent nature really gets on edge when I think about major corporations taking over the Internet because they have the money to build and finance a trusted brand. But what is the lesson behind branding that we can all learn from this development?

A brand is more than a logo or advertising message of a company. From what I understand it is the core values of a company.

Companies want to brand so their products have higher perceived value in the marketplace. It will become more and more important for smaller companies to brand themselves to have natural search ranking and relevance in the future.

We will all have to create great websites that establish value, trust and credibility in the future to brand ourselves online. Structure a great site that really helps and informs people in your industry and you will eventually rank higher and sell more.

If we become compelling brands ourselves we will have the opportunity again to swing Google, Bing, and the major Search Engines in our favor. They will have to protect their own brands as providing the most valuable and not necessarily the most corporate websites to their users.

KTS ~ North America (USA & Canada) have the largest percentage of people online at 74.2%. Next is Oceania/Australia at 60.4%. Europe is at 52%.
